This installation artwork is crafted from 1,500 carefully arranged spray paint cans, standing 9 feet tall and 9 feet wide. It's not just a visually stunning piece, but also a personal tribute to my journey in spray paint art. Why empty spray cans, you ask? It all dates back to 2018 when I first began teaching myself the art of spray painting. Without a mentor to guide me, I spent three years learning the basic techniques through passion and perseverance—occasionally paying for online courses to refine my skills. One day, when I held a spray can, it felt like destiny. I realized: "To do a good job, one must first sharpen their tools!" The spray can became more than just a tool; it became part of my soul. I even tattooed a spray nozzle on my right index finger, symbolizing my deep connection to this medium.
What makes this installation unique is its dual-sided, movable design, offering an interactive and story-rich experience. I've also 2 hidden feature within the piece, which cleverly tie into a larger mural project—an homage to one of my biggest inspirations.
The front features a portrait of Jay Chou, inspired by one of the album covers from his Still Fantasy album. Why choose this image of Jay? It connects to the iconic song "Listen to Your Mom," which has become a household classic. The song's emotional depth, coupled with the story of Jay's mother, Ye Hui Mei, a woman who has been a great influence in his life and once an art teacher herself, inspired me to pay tribute to both.
On the back is a portrait of Ye Hui Mei, and on the right side of the piece is a set of piano keys, representing Jay's extraordinary musical talent and perfect pitch. This work is not just a visual spectacle but also a treasure hunt. I hope that through this whimsical artistic expression, viewers will not only appreciate its beauty but also uncover the hidden stories and mysteries within. This, to me, is what makes art truly fascinating and captivating!
